Oyster reefs provide a wealth of services that benefit marine life and human life alike: they clean and filter water, protect shorelines from flooding and storm surges, and serve as vital fish habitat—in turn supporting fishing communities and the seafood-heavy diets of coastal populations like Hong Kong’s. But urban development, damaging fishing practices, marine pollution and climate change are putting these once-thriving ecosystems in decline.
